An omelette is a common form of cooking eggs worldwide. Various countries have their specialty versions; the French omelette is considered the classic, and its method of cooking can become quite ritualistic, while the Italian Frittata and its close relative, the Spanish omelette are totally different from the French but classics in their own countries. Those versions are eaten both hot and cold.

Asian cooking uses omelettes in widely varying ways: many rice and noodle dishes feature thin omelette cut into strips and mixed with other ingredients, or cooked in ghee or other fats or oils with spices and filled with meat or vegetable mixtures.

So, there is no single country which can claim the omelette as its own. However cooked, it makes a delicious meal which can be either light or filling, depending on other ingredients which might be added.

Omelettes may be either savoury or sweet, depending on the cooking method and ingredients.
