chickens only lay one egg at a time. each egg will stay in the hen for the same timeweather they are fertile or not. after being laid the hen then may sit on her eggs in hope their are fertile and if they do not hatch she will go away and lay again, what a tiring life. then they sit on their eggs, as they do not always it is called being cluckey. some breeds like Isa browns do not go cluckey. when cluckey they will protect their nest witch all their might and they cluck allot
