yes it can
Cherries can ripen off the tree through a process called ethylene gas exposure. When cherries are picked, they continue to produce ethylene gas, which helps them ripen further. Placing cherries in a paper bag with a ripe banana or apple can also speed up the ripening process.

Yes, of course. Here's a few: I picked an apple from an apple tree. I get my apples from the orchard nearby, there's lots of apple trees there. That farmer is picking apples from that apple tree.

Pears are typically ready to be picked when they have reached full size and are beginning to change color, depending on the variety. Unlike many fruits, pears should be harvested while still firm, as they ripen off the tree. A good indicator is to gently twist the fruit; if it comes off easily, it's ready to be picked. It's best to pick them a few weeks before they would naturally ripen on the tree for optimal flavor and texture.
Cherries do not ripen off the tree. To ensure cherries ripen properly, leave them on the tree until they are fully ripe. Harvest them carefully to avoid bruising, and store them in a cool place to maintain freshness.

They need to be softened off the tree. Firm avocados take about two to three days to ripen. Cherries will ripen if picked after they start to change color. You can place partilly ripe cherries in a bowl or paper bag at room temperature and they will ripen to a degree. We have used the technique on sweet and pie cherries as well as wild cherries. Of course they are not as sweet as cherries picked ripe on the tree but they are an improvement over cherries that you don't get at all because the birds ate them! Greg Schneider
Oranges generally won't ripen once removed from the tree.
