Some of the very cold hardy species (Basjoo, etc.) can grow in west Texas. They need shade and lots of water in the summer but will freeze back in the winter. Normally they will grow again the following warm season unless it has been a very harsh winter. They require frequent applications of fertilizer during the growing season. They should be grown in large pots in areas sheltered from the wind or will quickly have their leaves shredded. Growing in pots also allows them to be moved indoors in the winter.
