I personally use yogurt in place of butter in banana bread and oatmeal cookies, any cookies actually. I have never tried muffins but assume it works about the same.
For cookies it turns out very light and they puff up better, for bread it helps keep it moist and tastes great.
You can use alternatives like vegetable oil, applesauce, or Greek yogurt as substitutes for butter in muffins.
Applesauce is a good substitute. Other pureed fruits may also work. Some use yogurt, butter, margarine, egg whites, sugar, or honey as substitutes. Many low-fat products make up for the fat with sugars, making the product higher-calorie than the original.

Yes, you can substitute applesauce for yogurt in a muffin recipe, but it may alter the texture and flavor slightly. Applesauce will add moisture and sweetness, so you might want to reduce the sugar in the recipe. Additionally, yogurt contributes a bit of tanginess that applesauce won't provide, but the muffins should still turn out well. Adjustments may be needed based on the specific recipe.
