MacDonald's did not invent the hamburger (which is simply ground beef on a bun, and has probably been around for ages). MacDonald's created a system of mass production for Hamburgers and other foodstuffs which allowed for a much higher sales volume than a conventional restaurant, at greatly reduced costs. Basically they invented a food factory.
