No they can not. Ducks and chickens are different species. Both are made differently. They may be close but try thinking of a chick a Dee and a sparrow. They do not cross breed even though they are fairly similar in stature.

Why do chickens lay unfertilized eggs?

Chickens lay unfertilized eggs because they do not need a rooster to produce eggs. Hens have reproductive systems that allow them to lay eggs regularly, whether or not they have mated with a rooster.

Do you need a rooster to make a egg?

You do not need a rooster for a hen to lay eggs. A well feed, happy hen of appropriate age will lay about one egg a day. If a rooster is around the eggs will be fertilized and you get more chickens, if not you get yummy eggs to eat.

Do you need a rooster to get your chickens to start laying eggs?

No, they will lay eggs even if they don't have a rooster. If you want chicks however you have to have a rooster.Yes chickens doo. they start to lay eggs at about 6-8 weeks of age regardless if there is a rooster around or not. if you have a rooster you can not eat the eggs as they may be fertile. in extreem heat or cold chickens may not lay for a few weeks expectialy if the temprature changed quickley. chickens also go cluckey, wich means they want to become a mum. they will sit on the nest if the is a egg there or not and can die if it is very hot. it is then they must be taken of the nest by force. when nesting they can be quite frocious and peek you. they will also do this without a rooster. they are great to have around and make your home feel that little bit better.

Do chickens need a rooster to have babies?

Yes. The rooster fertilizes the egg.

Do all chickens need to mate to produce eggs?

No, they do not have to breed to lay eggs. If you don't get it, think of it this way: an egg is laid by a hen roughly every 25 hrs (it is a bit like a period, i suppose). The only difference breeding (mating) would make is whether the egg is fertilised (IE. If it would become a chick)

What are old chickens called?

Old chickens are called hens or stewing hens. These are chickens that no longer produce eggs. Their muscles are tough and need to be stewed a long time to become a delicious treat. They make good chicken soup.

Do you need a roster for hens to lay eggs?

No,they lay eggs by them selfs but if you want CHICKS you need a roster to mate with thus they have chicks not eggs the normal ones. No, a hen will lay eggs regardless of there being a rooster so long as she is kept comfortable and happy with a safe quiet place to lay her eggs. A rooster is needed if you want to breed more chickens since he will fertilize the eggs.

Do you need a rooster for hens to lay?

No. Chickens will lay perfectly good eggs without a rooster. In fact, many people prefer not to keep a rooster, because they don't want to find a fertilized egg that was a little too far along.

Can chickens hatch eggs without the help of a rooster?

If the rooster was around a week before the eggs were laid then, yes, they can be hatched. But if there has never been a rooster around then, sorry, there can't be any chicks. You can buy already fertilized eggs for chickens to sit on and hatch even if you don't have a rooster.
