Chewing Gum in various forms has been around for thousands of years, so at least a few of the earliest settlers probably chewed gum. But, widespread use of chewing gum by modern civilization came about in the early 1800s when English settlements adopted the practice from American Indians.

Chewing gum as we know it today was invented in the 1850s by Thomas Adams.
