Little is known about the origin of popcorn seeds or any other type of maize, except that it most likely evolved into its current state in Mesoamerica. There are theories that suggest that it evolved from other existing plants to which it shares some genetic similarities. I am attaching a link to the Wikipedia entry for Maize that may answer this question from a strictly genetic standpoint. From a cultural standpoint, the residents of Mesoamerica, and later on, residents of all other countries in the world that started growing corn, began breeding maize for certain traits. While it is not certain what event led to the realization that popcorn could be produced from maize, it is evident that certain types of maize produce better popcorn than others. This may have been the result of breeding by natives of Mesoamerica. Popping corn "ears" that are 5600 years old have been found in New Mexico.

The Christmas tradition of popcorn garlands is believed to have originated in the United States. It became popular in the 19th century as a festive decoration for Christmas trees. The practice likely evolved from earlier European customs of using various edible items to adorn trees. Today, popcorn garlands are a charming and nostalgic way to celebrate the holiday season.
Popcorn was invented in North America by the Native Americans. When Pilgrims came over on the Mayflower the Indians taught them how to make popcorn, which was by putting maize (corn) in a pot or pan and putting it over a fire. The corn would then pop, creating the delicious snack that we love today.
