It is cake that has spoiled and gone bad. This cna be for a number of reasons. Mold coould have begun to grow. Also, the fluffy-ness in cake decreases as soon as it is not baking any more. As the days pass, this will result in the hardening of the cake, making it sour and firm and not good to eat.
I don't know about them going stale, but they do cake.
A macaroon is actually classed as a cake, because when cakes go stale they harden, but biscuit soften when they go stale!
Lamingtons go stale within just a few days because they are based on sponge cake.
Cake will go stale eventually at any temperature above freezing, or if frozen without proper wrapping.
um..... cake can sit out for a week but i can assure u it wont be very good when that week is over... it would be very stale!

it depends on how out dated. a few days, sure. a few years, i wouldn't because is causes the pie or cake to become very stale opened or unopened its all the same
Cake mix would be non-perishable. The finished, baked cake would not be non-perishable.
