Depends in the thickness of the steak, the heat of the grill, and the distance from the grilling element (charcoal, propane, etc.).
Hold your hand roughly an inch over the grill. If you can't hold it there for more than 2 seconds, that means a hot grill (Please be careful not to hurt yourself soing this!). A 1" thick steak at room temp would take about 3-4 minutes per side for medium. Colder grills and thicker steaks take longer of course.
And FYI -- this isn't BBQ -- this is grilling or grillade.
For a medium to medium-rare steak, I would grill this over hot coals for 6 minutes on the first side. Turn and grill for about 4 minutes on the other side.
A medium steak typically takes about 6-8 minutes to cook on each side, depending on the thickness of the steak and the desired level of doneness.
In my opinion the best type of BBQ sauce or marinade for steak is Masterfoods Red Wine and Garlic marinade. The flavours of this combination are superb, and increase the quality of any quality of steak.

Grilling the perfect steak takes some practice, but consider these tips the next time you get out the BBQ grill. Buy the best cut of beef that you can afford. Marinate the steak in the refrigerator the night before cooking. Look up cooking times for the meat cut that you purchased, and let it grill without touching it. Stainless steel BBQ grills make a beautiful addition to your patio and a great way to grill steak.
The steak can be rare, medium or well-done. The eggs can be "up" (sunnyside up), "over" scrambled or poached. For example, you would simply say: "The steak medium rare, and the eggs over, please".
