Eggs really should be collected within at least 24 hours. The temperature and humidity of the chicken coop will determine how quickly the egg will start to deteriorate.

Even if the eggs are not fertilized they can still go bad relatively quickly if the hen house is hot. Eggs can be stored in a cool dry place for a week or longer and still remain edible. In North America it is recommended that we refrigerate as soon as possible but in many countries where refrigeration is not available eggs are often placed in a food pantry and consumed days later.

When in doubt, do a float test. Stale/bad eggs float in a bowl of water, fresh eggs do not float.
