How many goldfish should you keep in one tank?

Well I don't really understand what your question is but i am guessing that you mean how WELL goldfish do in a 5 gallon tank. The answer is, pretty good if you don't get a full grown one. But be careful, some goldfish live longer than others. out of my 5 goldfish that I have had through my life, 1 has survived three days. One of the others survived about 3-4 months while two others lived for 6 months. my most recent fish just passed away at 3 years. He was my miracle fish. of course, the others were in a bowl and of course tanks are better for the circulation of water. GOOD LUCK :)

Actually, you shouldn't keep goldfish in a small aquarium at all . Goldfish can get huge (up to 10 inches) and produce a ton of waste. A good alternative is fish like neon tetras, which you can keep 5 in a 5g if you have a good filter, but that is almost too many. Livebearers are good, too, except you'll need another aquarium to keep fry in.Platies and Guppies (3 exactly,1 male and 2 females, or all females). Swordtails get too big. Stay away from cardinal tetras until you gain more experiance. If you get a betta, be careful with small fish and fin nippers. Keep the tank near an air heater unless you get a mini aquarium heater. You can keep 2 goldfish instead, but don't blame me if they can't turn around soon.

Goldfish commonly grow to around 10 incges so, using the base rule for fish keeping "1 inch of fish needs a minimum of 1 gallon of water" and knowing that an aquarium is never filled to the brim but rather it's filled to about 1 inch below the brim, your 55 gal tank will hold as a max less than 50 galsUS. So to max the tank out you could add 4 goldfish. I would say 2 goldfish would be the correct stocking rate for your tank.

2 maybe 3 if you had excellent filtration that filtered the water 10 times per hour (300 gph) However, the goldfish will not be 5 inches for long. If they are fancy goldfish(ie the fatter looking ones) they will grow to 8 inches or so and will need a 37 gallon tank for 3 of them later on. However 2 fancy goldfish in a 30g tank will be fine for their whole life in that tank, which would be a good option if you dont want to have to buy a bigger tank later on. If they are common goldfish (sleek bodied) like ones you see in stores for 25 cents or so they will grow to a foot long and will need at least a 60+ gallon tank when full grown.

One fancy goldfish needs at minimum a 20 gallon tank on it's own. With a 4 gallon tank, the best option would be to buy a betta
