The zona or zona pellucida is the thick protein shell around a human egg. In order for the egg to become fertilized, the sperm has to break through the zona.
the egg's shell is not that thick like the crust, the egg white is the thickest like the mantle and the yolk is thick like the core

The taste of an emu egg is similar to a chicken egg but with a richer and creamier flavor.
It takes exactly 8 weeks for a emu egg to hatch, & they should be incubated at a steady temp of 96-97 degrees. If incubated at a higher temperature, the chicks will have trouble getting out of the egg. This is because the egg shell hardens.
I just bought an emu egg from an emu farm. The owner of the farm told me 1 hour and 45 minutes to hard boil the egg.

the shell of an egg
If the shell was too thick, it would not allow for the gas exchange required to maintain life for the chick, and indeed the shells of larger birds such as emu, kiwi, etc, do have very conspicuous pores. The bird only makes the shell as thick as it is needed - a larger eggshell needs to be stronger to withstand the greater forces of its own weight, and minor impacts. Perhaps you could measure the thickness of a small bird's egg shell, and compare that to a chicken, and have a look at an ostrich egg in a museum. Be a scientist.
Ostrich eggs are larger than emu eggs, with a thicker shell. Emu eggs have a richer taste compared to ostrich eggs. In terms of nutritional value, both eggs are similar in protein content but emu eggs have higher levels of certain nutrients like vitamin E and omega-3 fatty acids.
