Castration of a rooster is called caponization and should only be done by an experienced person or veterinarian. It is also illegal in some places. The rooster is usually given antibiotics and taken off food and water prior to the procedure. A small slit is made two lowest ribs, and the testicles removed and cut so no tissue remains in the body cavity. The slit is allowed to heal without closures. Many roosters die during or after the procedure, especially if it is not done properly or in unsanitary conditions.
