Saf-T-Pops were developed in the early 1940s by Carl W. Spohr of Chicago and Robert F. Bracke of Arlington Heights, Illinois. Curtiss Candy Company acquired the rights to Saf-T-Pops in the late 1940s. At this time, Curtiss was a division of Standard Brands, who also made the popular Baby Ruth candy bar. The idea for Saf-T-Pops, a lollipop for toddlers with a flexible fiber loop handle, was patented April 7, 1942. Spangler Candy Company bought the brand in 1978 from Curtiss Candy Company in Chicago and began production in 1979. Spangler Candy is still making Saf-T-Pops, about 500,000 each day.
Mr. Spangler did not take over for Bill Nye. Mr. Spangler is just superior to Bill Nye. They're both still around.

It was the Ghiradelli Candy Company that started in Hornitos. They are now in San Francisco. The ruins from the Ghiradelli Candy Company in Hornitos still stand. There is just a piece of the wall left. Look up the name Hornitos and Ghiradelli Candy and you will find information about this. Why did Mr. Ghiradelli move his family from the mining town of Hornitos? It was because the town had gotten pretty wild and he didn't want to raise his family there, so they travelled to San Francisco and established his business which still stands to this day.
