Wandering Jew (Tradescantia spp.,) has been found to be poisonous to cattle, according to an old article in the Agricultural Gazette of New South Wales (June 1977, 88 (3); no link available), as well as Kate Blood's book Environmental Weeds: A Field Guide for SE Australia (2001). Nitrates have been associated with cases of sudden death in cattle that happened to consume this plant. It is also toxic to sheep if they consume the leaves. The same effects have not found to be similar in goats, toxicity being lower in Caprine animals than in Ovines or Bovines. Pigs, cats and chickens are also tolerant to this plant, with no toxicity effects found in them. With horses, it has been seen to cause eczema on their muzzles.

The poisoning level for humans and dogs is dermatitis (lowest on poisonous scale); it can cause skin rashes, irritations or in some cases Allergies if a particular area is exposed to this plant. There is some speculation that it could be due to the calcium oxalate raphides (or calcium oxalate crystals) in the sap that causes such irritation reactions.

Is Wandering Willy poisonous or toxic to animals or plants?

No, Wandering Willy [Tradescantia fluminensis] isn't poisonous or toxic in animals. But that may or may not be true in terms of people. Scientists still are researching that question. But two things may be said with certainty at this point.First, whatever poisonousness or toxicity that may or may not be established in the future is low level. Second, as is the case with all spiderworts [Tradescantia spp], Wandering Willy may cause a fleeting irritation or itchiness on the skin of a susceptible person. That reaction may occur when there's human contact with the plant's leaves.
