This is legal and can be obtained by the fact that in order to give something the label of "sugar free" it has to contain less than 0.5 grams of sugar per serving.
There has been no evidence that sugar free gum actually whitens your teeth. Regular toothpaste does that.

The reason why you are not allowed chewing/bubble gum is mainly because of it sticking to your brackets (the bit attached to your tooth), not because of the sugar content. However, the sugarfree gum tends to be less sticky and so you would have less chance of it getting caught in your brackets. But I really don't recommend chewing gum of any kind whilst wearing braces..been there, done that! Hope this helps (:

Well, it depends. For diet sodas, yes indeed they are sugar free, thanks to the aspartame. But with foods, it is illegal to say that foods are sugar free when they're not, because if a food as sugar in it, then it MUST say so on the nutrition facts label. If it doesn't, then it has to LEGALLY be sugar free. Any company who does something like this to get more customers is guilty of a crime.
