Both claws gone-
Hermit crabs use the big claw as a shield, a hand, and a weapon, the smaller shell is normally used for drinking water. It will be able to eat powdery or wet food with the small claw, but won't be able to defend itself, so it will be kind of skittish and scared. The claw will only grow back the next time it molts, which if she is small, will most likely be within a few months.
If both claws are gone, crab will be able to pick up small bits of food with it's chelipods (mouth parts), continue to offer very small and soft foods.
feed her,and wash her
Yes, a hermit crab will grow its let back if it has lost one when it molts. It's easier to see if your hermit crab has signs of molting. If its lost a leg you will see that the leg will start to turn into a gelatin like substance. Which tells you its going inot the stage of molting.
YA think??? Of course he is dead
well, did you have spare shells for him to move into? if not, he couldn't desperately find a new home. if you do and you have other hermit crabs in the tank, then your best bet is that he was in a fight for a shell that another hermit crab was interested in and, obviously, lost the fight. sorry for the loss of your hermit crab and i am sure that it wasn't your fault entirely.
It is considered a limb, not an arm. And the loss of a limb does not necessarily mean the hermie crab has died, but is a hermit crab that is very stressed. One needs to double check their tank perimeters to make sure they are correct.
they loose their legs like we loose teeth
When hermit crabs are under stress or sick they may lose legs or claws. An example of this is also when a predator catches a crab by a limb the crab will release the said limp to escape danger. Some crabs may lose a leg or claw when molting. Tyson in Tampa. my sons hermit crab just lost all of its legs .we accidently left him all night in the sink and apparently he was so stressed he lost all legs trying to climb up i tought he was dead and was getting ready to throw him in the garbage when i saw it move hes still alive but wont come out of his shell im hoping it wont die .
It is ok for your hermit crab to lose only one leg in a certain amount of time but if your crab is losing more than one leg a nite put them in an isolated tank because there is a chance your crab may be dying.
Buy it a new shell any kind no shells right out of the beach . Because it needs itsshell . It cant survive with out one.
The young develop in four stages, two of which (the naulipus and protozoea) occur while still in the egg. Most hatch at the third stage, the zoea. This is a larval stage wherein the crab has several long spines, a long narrow abdomen, and large fringed antennae. The fourth stage of development is the megalopa.Juvenile land hermit crabs move away from the water. They then grow and develop through moulting in which they shed their exoskeleton. During moulting, they are extremely vulnerable and inactive, and usually burrow in the ground for protection. The new exoskeleton hardens and the crab regenerates lost or broken claws or legs in around 10 days. A hermit crab can moult as often as every other month when young, and every 18 months when they are older.-WikipediaHope this helped...
A hermit crab grows out of it's shell and looks for a new discarded snail's shell. Snails produce the shells and once the snails die the shells become homes for hermit crabs. Hermit crabs molt their exoskeleton Large Jumbo crabs molt about once a month and smaller crabs molt a few times a month. They collect water and food into their shell and burrow deep into the sand where they shed their old skeleton and eat it. They eat their old skeleton to regain nutrients that they lost during the molting process. If a hermit crab looses it's legs (which doesn't usually happen during the molting process) they will regenerate.
yes, The mud Crab (infact most crabs) will grow back any claws they have lost in fights (or to escape predators) within 1-2 months. This is quite common and a reason why you should not pick one up by just the claws if you do catch one. good luck when you are out!!
