My larger goldfish has gray-ish black-ish areas around its gills and head. Is this a sign of brain damage??? It has been showing no other signs besides this. PLEASE HELP! Sorry about putting the full question in the answer. ^.^
The loss of ANY sense "could" be a sign of brain damage. But it, certainly, doesn't mean that there IS brain damage. A doctor is, most definitely, suggested at the first sign of a loss of any of your senses!
The size of a goldfishes brain would depend upon the size of the goldfish. It is however quite large enough to enable the goldfish to survive. By comparison to mammals though it is small.
No, goldfish do not eat decor (unless it's a real aquatic plant, when it comes to those they will shred it to pieces). Over time, they may constantly peck at it, which is just a sign that they're looking for algae to eat (goldfish LOVE algae), but it dosen't do any damage to the decor.
The difference is that one can have a brain injury and not have brain damage. Essentially, brain damage is caused by injury or trauma to the brain. However, not every injury to the brain will cause brain damage.

Strokes can cause this because they make a person lose some of their brain function. Brain damage can also cause this.
Fairly intelligent. Well they can count to five!
When the brain is deprived of oxygen, it cannot function properly, leading to an imbalance in the electrical activity of the brain. This can trigger abnormal neuronal firing, resulting in seizures. Seizures are a sign of brain dysfunction and can occur as a response to the stress caused by lack of oxygen.
Yes a lot bigger.
