The male betta only seems to 'hate' each other. As they are so flamboyant aggressive when it comes to flashing their beauty for the female. Since mating is the primary motive for the dominant males, they look at other males (or even in a mirror0 as competition for the girls.

I had a 'community' tank for many decades, on/off, and whenever I got the urge for a beautiful Siamese Fighting Fish (their old skool name) they had no problem with the other species of fish. However, as all hobbyists know; Cichlids can be aggressive, esp. when they're larger than others in the tank. So keep the sizes comparative, and you might get to enjoy a colorful male betta along with your gouramis, angels, cats, etc. Watch it with 'characins' as they are the KNOWN FIN-NIPPERS, they cause havoc when taking off bits/pieces of others long fins, causing bacterial growths or disease to grow.

What is the best fish for a small aquarium?

A dozen tetras would do well in a small fish tank.Betta Fish would also do great in smaller tanks but should be kept alone without any other fish in the tank(unless the other fish is one of the few that get along with Bettas). Goldfish do not do well in smaller fish tanks because they are very dirty fish that need a lot of filtration and room to swim.

Can Betta fish co exist with other fish?

It is a misconception that betta fish do not get along with other fish. While intolerant to their own species, bettas can get along with other fish so long as they are not easy to mistake for another male betta - such as fancy guppies - or fin-nipping fish like many tetras that often go for long-finned fish. Female bettas can be housed with guppies, however.
