A lunge whip is a training tool used in equestrian disciplines to encourage a horse to move forward and maintain a desired pace while lunging. It typically features a long, flexible shaft with a short, lightweight lash at the end, allowing the handler to signal the horse from a distance without physical contact. This tool helps in developing the horse's responsiveness, balance, and overall fitness during training sessions. Additionally, it can be used to refine cues and commands, enhancing communication between horse and handler.

To lunge a horse you typically use a lunge line and a lunge whip. To apply the lunge line, put the clip side through the hole in your horses bit where the clip is going towards the horse. Then, run the line over the horses poll, behind the ears, and attach it to a bar in the bit on the other side. Now stand on the side where you first inserted the bit. Pick up your lunge whip and start to wave it around. Depending on the horses sensitivity, he may canter or walk off. Gradually let go of each loop of the lunge line until you are at or near the end. To crack a whip, fling it up and down in a fast motion and it should make a cracking sound, which will therefore make your horse go faster. To make him slow down, pull on the line a little and say wwhhooaa.. in a slow, quiet and calming tone. Add on can be bought as well... for example, there are sturrip keepers, side reins, pessoas lunging system, and others. Search on google or ask the sales person at your local tack shop :D hope this helps!
Is the lunging whip close to his mouth, because it shouldn't be. Keep it close to his back hooves when lunging. If you have a lead rope while lunging, and the horse tries to turn around and nibble the whip, keep control of him with the lead rope. When he starts bucking and rearing, take this as a sign that he is about to bite the whip. Ignore the bucking and rearing, he will soon see that he doesn't get extra attention from it and stop. When he tries to play tug of war, don't fight with him. Let him have the whip, don't encourage him by playing along. Eventually he will get the idea and drop it. You should look into lunging correctly to make sure that he isn't doing this because of you. Remember that the lunging whip is not to be used on the horse, the horse should only be guided by the whip's position and the sound that it makes. If you have been hitting or tapping your horse with the lunge whip for encouragement, you may be annoying your horse. The thin lunge whip feels like a fly or something tickling the horse if you use it very lightly. Instead of making contact to the horse with the whip, tap the whip on the ground. The sound that the whip makes will tell your horse what to do.

There are 2 basic types of whips. What is refered to above as a schooling whip is most commonly called a lunge whip. There are variations on this but these types of whips are used for inhand training. (handler on the ground). The jump whip is usually called a riding crop which a rider carries while riding. Most whips come from one or the other of these 2 groups. The exception are the whips used for dressage training. They are longer than riding crops and shorter the inhand whips. Inhand whips are used to encourage forward movement. Riding crops or bats are used as leg aids. None of these whips should be used as punishment. Most whips are better left to more experienced horse people that understand their use.
