Potato chips are a mixture, as they consist of various ingredients, including potatoes, oil, salt, and sometimes flavorings, all combined together without a fixed composition. Each component retains its individual properties rather than forming a chemical bond, which distinguishes mixtures from compounds. An element, on the other hand, is a pure substance consisting of only one type of atom, such as gold or oxygen, and is not applicable to potato chips.
Chips are not a compound or an element. They are a mixture of ingredients such as potatoes, oil, and seasoning.
Potato chips, and other foods, are mixtures of compounds. Foods are made of a large variety of molecules composing the sugars, starches, salts, and liquids in them. The elements are there, of course, combining to make up the molecules, but foods are not simple elemental substances.

What about potato? It is a white root vegetable, that can be eaten raw, boiled, baked ( in its skin), chipped, mashed, sliced. It is a very versatile vegetable. Its biological origins are yams or sweet potatoes. However, when grown in a cooler/cold climate, they loose their sweetness. They are a very starchy vegetable, but do contain ascorbic acid (Vitamin C). They grow under the surface of the ground. When dug up, they must be kept in the dark. If exposed to light they become green , which is a very poisonous compound. Their origins are the Americas, and were brought to Europe in the 16th Century by Sir Walter Raleigh, who also brought tomatoes and tobacco to Europe.
