What is nationlism and what effect did it have on world war1?

Nationalism is the devotion to and identification with one's nation and government as opposed to one's land or cultural heritage. Started with the American and French Revolution and united vast amounts of different cultures and peoples under the government. In World War I, Nationalism was used by governments to mobilize and motivate the country to fight and win. A good example is the use of Propaganda to dehumanize the nation's enemies and unify the country under the common goal of defeating the enemy.
