What is the best type of soil to grow melons in? Acid or Alkaline? What are the best types of fertilizer for them. I added some phospherous to mine and it seemed to help. I have never had the soil tested and have been trying different melons and such to see what will grow best here. (Central Oklahoma) I did add aged manure and compost which really helped, but only for a short time. Plants started losing there dark green and developed blight of some sort. Not healthy looking at all. Melons are not sweet. What is the best type of soil to grow melons in? Acid or Alkaline? What are the best types of fertilizer for them. Watermelon plants have a fibrous root system. This type of root system consists of numerous thin, branching roots that spread out horizontally rather than growing deep into the soil. The fibrous roots help the plant efficiently absorb water and nutrients from the top layers of the soil, which is essential for its growth and fruit development.
