The Ngarrindjeri people were well known by the Europeans for their fantastic cooking abilities and their amazing skills when cooking over a camp oven. The remains of them can still be found along the Murry River today. Some different fish, birds and other small animals that were easily caught were firstly given to the elderly and unwell because there were ample amounts to go around. Ngarrindjeri people were very respectful and in the early years of the colony they would volunteer to catch fish for fellow white men camping along the Murry. Some tribes were only aloud to eat food caught by their own tribe otherwise it was known as being disrespectful. Male dogs were friends of the Ngarrindjeri people so they would never be considered food. Female dogs were also never eaten because they were said to be "unclean". Snakes were never eaten either because the feel of their skin was very unpleasant. Bird eggs were considered more valuable than the actual bird. Different types of food were caught only for women and pregnant woman such as Bats and White Owls. 1
