The caramelised onions in the onion tart are packed with sweetness, so therefore would need a wine that is ripe and aromatic to compliment the food.
An Alsace Pinot Gris will work beautifully well with an onion tart. Otherwise New World Sauvignons and Chardonnays are also very good matches.
