When is the best time to harvest plum tomatoes?

Tomato's are normally grown in from Spring through Autumn. The month of production depends where you are in the world.

From a purchase perspective though, most countries have tomato's available throughout the year (as they can be imported), although the price may vary according to the amount of production and seasonality.

When you pick tomatoes depends on two things - type of tomato and how you wish to use it. For example, the larger varieties of red tomatoes, such as Big Boy or Beefmaster are great picked while they are still green (but not totally firm) for slicing and frying. For typical uses, the red tomatoes should be picked when they are slightly soft, bright red, and have a nice "tomato-y" smell. Red cherry tomatoes can be picked anytime they are fully red to when they "pick themselves" and fall to the ground. Yellow and pink varieties are similar, but obviously their colors are different.
