Check the leaf closest to where the melon connects to the stem, it should be dying back.

The fruit should not be hairy to the touch and on some varieties could be a little waxy.

The skin may have some thin netting that shows some slight cracking between the veins.

It should be close to the maturity date listed on the seed pack.
