The answer depends entirely on the religion:

• The Jews believe that the last prophet was Malachi in the Old Testament.
• Mainstream Christianity believes John the Baptist to be the last prophet since as Jesus was God himself, he could not be a prophet.
• Mainstream Islam believes Mohammed to be the last prophet.
• The Baha'i believe that Baha'ullah was the last prophet.
• The Ahmadiyya believe it to be Ahmed Mirza Ghulam.
• The last prophet of Church of God and Saints of Christ was William S. Crowdy.
• The Mormons continue to receive Divine Revelation through the President of the Church of Latter Day Saints. Their current President is Thomas S. Manson and his predecessor was Gordon B. Hickley who passed away on January 27, 2008.

The list could go on...but all of these religions believe that these prophets (who are the last prophet according to them) received revelations from the singular Monotheistic God.

The existence of the "last prophet" necessitates that the time of man's rule on earth be at its end... as far as Bible prophecy is concerned. But according to prophecy, there will be TWO "last prophets" just before Jesus returns; not ONE:

"...I will permit My TWO WITNESSES, clothed in sackcloth, TO PROPHESY for one thousand, two hundred and sixty days [three-and-a-half years]." (Rev.11:3 WNT William's New Testament)

A study of this chapter in the chronologically written book of Revelation reveals that Jesus Christ returns "three-and-a-half DAYS" after they are killed, following their witnessing, prophesying and testimony against man's rule on earth. The "seventh angel" sounds his "trumpet" [the last trump, which heralds the time of the LORD's return - see I Cor.15:52]. And then, these Two Last Prophets resurrect from the dead [in Christ]... and MAN'S RULE ON EARTH COMES TO ITS END:

"...there were loud voices shouting from heaven: 'The whole world has now become the Kingdom of our LORD and of His Christ, and He will reign forever and ever.'" (Rev.11:15 NLT New Living Translation)

After that... there will be no need for any more prophets, because the Knowledge of the LORD will be common knowledge among all the nations:

"...they will not need to teach their neighbors, nor will they need to teach their family, saying, 'You should know the LORD.' For everyone, from the least to the greatest will already know Me." (Heb.8:11 NLT)

The "last prophet" will be TWO of them; THE TWO WITNESSES!

Quran says:

Muhammad is not the father of any male among you, but he is the messenger of God and the seal of the prophets; and God is aware of all things (33:40).

Some people believe that Malachi should not be a separate book of The Bible, but that it is really the last few pages of Zechariah. They say that Malachi, which means "my messenger," was just another name for Zechariah.

At the time of John the Baptist (Yahya), many Jews believed he was a true prophet. The Ebionites believe to this day that he was the greatest of all the propehts.

Most modern Jews would not agree that John the Baptist was a prophet.
