Why is the shell of an egg strong?

An eggshell is built on a structurally amazing shape. The stretched-ovoid shape evenly distributes pressure throughout the egg if pressed from the top, allowing the egg to withstand forces much greater than a shape that distributes the pressure to a certain point on the surface, like a cube, which would stress at the edges.
