The wound most likely has an infection that needs to be flushed out with Betadine solution and or expressed to get puss out. However, an infection that smells really bad could be gangrene if there is blackened skin surrounding the area.
Strong antibiotics are needed in either case which a vet could prescribe to you.

We have found if you use vaseline and push them back in, the chicken should survive.
a dog licks its wound to clean it especially if infected. The smell can come from a rot etc in the wound or even the saliver from the dog.
Umm, well if it was an open chest wound..there would be an obvious HOLE/CUT in your chest. you would be able to see it.
Do not put anything on your chicken's beak! Ask a vet to examine it and then they'll give you a perscription to heal the wound. Your Welcome :)

Granulation tissue is tissue with good blood circulation and adequate blood supply is needed for a wound to heal.
If you are not sure if a chest wound has penetrated the chest wall completely, treat the wound as though it were an open chest wound.
Clean the wound with a mild antiseptic solution, such as diluted povidone-iodine. Apply a thin layer of antibiotic ointment to help prevent infection. Keep the chicken in a clean, dry environment to promote healing and prevent further injury. If the wound is severe or shows signs of infection, seek veterinary advice.
