Some specific food colors have been found to be toxic, and have been removed from the market. Saying "toxic" is a little different from saying "poison." You could probably drink a bottle of the stuff as a one-time event, andit might not hurt you. But if you eat/drink aittle bits of it over a number of years, the substance builds up and might increase your chances of cancer or some other illness.

Some years back, the red dye that used to be in maraschino cherries turned out to be toxic. They use a different red now.
