Yes, unfortunately he faced depression. It developed because of the death of his second wife, and he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, more commonly known as manic depression, soon after, something with which he struggled for the rest of his life.

He looked very good for his age, except that the medication he had to take for his bipolar disorder damaged his heart and he retained fluid at the end of his life making this otherwise very slim and attractive man puffed up and appearing a bit overweight.

A book was published by a fan that gave the impression that Jeremy Brett died of congestive heart failure. Rumor within the 'London acting establishment' is that Jeremy Brett committed suicide taking an overdose of pills. Only his family, a few close friends, the police that worked the scene that day, and the London coroner actually know the truth. Jeremy Brett (may he rest in peace) was a brilliant actor but unfortunately plagued with manic-depression/bi-polar I (a mental illness that is found to be genetically-related) compounded in his later years with additional health issues mainly due to his unquenchable habit of chain-smoking. Being a manic-depressive (level I), there is a good chance that Mr. Brett did indeed take his own life. Mr. Brett had also lost his wife a few years earlier which compounded his depression and found himself in-and-out of mental hospitals the last few years of his life. If indeed Mr. Brett did take his own life, it is my hope that other suffers of manic-depression/bi-polar illness will see that suicide is not the way to stop the mental anguish that rages within. The world lost a wonderfully kind man and terrific actor who was tops in his profession. The world was far richer with him in it.
