It is revealed in the final book that he loved Lily Potter for most of his life and because of this love, which Voldemort never understood, he worked as a spy for Dumbledore and helped protect Harry. The act of killing Dumbledore was planned months before the actual event. Dumbledore was going to die within a year or so because he put on Marvolo Gaunt's ring (it was actually the Resurrection Stone, part of the Deathly Hallows) which had a terrible curse on it, which explains why his hand is black and looks dead in the sixth book. Snape is killed by Voldemort in the final book, but before he dies, he is able to give Harry his memories in accord with Dumbledore's instructions. It is through these memories that we realize that Snape is in fact a good guy. Harry later names his second son, Albus Severus. Harry tells his son in the final pages of the book that Snape was probably the bravest man that he ever knew.

∙ 12y agoNo, he never ever liked him. Severus Snape was protecting Harry Potter because he loved Harry's mother but Harry was a constant reminder that he lost Lily (Evans) Potter to his his enemy, James Potter.

Snape was completely loyal to Dumbledore. The reason Snape killed Dumbledore was because Dumbledore asked him to. Dumbledore planned to have Snape kill him to prevent Voldemort from getting the Elder Wand, which turned out to be pointless since Voldemort kills Snape in the seventh book and gains full control of the Elder Wand.

Due to this Snape was never able to form a positive relationship with Harry. The exception to Harry's resemblance with James did not include his eyes. Harry had Lily's eyes. This was a constant reminder to Snape of his guilt and of what Voldemort could do. No matter how Snape felt about Harry, it was Lily's eyes that kept Snape committed to Harry and what he had to do to protect him and help him defeat Voldemort at any cost.
