The ferris wheel was built to rival France's Eiffel Tower in 1893. It was displayed at the World's Columbian Exposition. Members of the planning committee wanted something, "original, daring, and unique", and the Ferris wheel seemed to be exactly what they were looking for (after a bit of persuasion and proof George Ferris was not a crackpot, of course). This wheel was a demonstration of the engineering expertise of the US, and impressed thousands at the World's Fair, including foreigners. I suppose what I'm trying to say is this; The Ferris wheel was a huge step forward in technology, for people could soar up into the sky during a time when there were no skyscrapers, jets, or even elevators. Finally, children knew what it was like to fly with the birds- at a safe speed so the wheel's rotation wouldn't overtake gravity and people would be thrown everywhere.
