Then he approached Holly, who tried to hypnotize Artemis with the mezmer, but since he was wearing mirrored sunglasses, it failed. Artemis then kidnapped her and said he'd release her for one metric ton of gold. Though, after Holly saved his mother, Artemis let her go. They have since become friends and, in the latest book, Holly and Artemis (who is by then about 17) develop an... interest for each other, though that is put on hold when they have to do the whole "save the world" thing.

In the 5th Artemis Fowl book (The Lost Colony) Artemis Fowl is trying to save the demon planet from starting a cross-species war because an ancient time spell is stopping them killing the humans. While doing this he meets a young girl, who is the same age as Artemis was when he discovered fairies do exist (12 years old) and she is trying to capture one for scientific research. Holly tries to rescue him and gets caught her self. When they are both freed, they have to go and save the demon planet. The ruler kills Holly, but they are going through time faster than on Earth, and Artemis saves her by shooting at Abbot (The leader who shot Holly) and having the bullet go back through time to stop him hitting her. They save the planet, but when they get back to Earth, Artemis has some of Holly's magic, one of her hazel eyes, and she has one of his blue ones. Also they have been gone for three years. And while he has been away, Artemis's parents have had twins boys! So Artemis is a big brother... and is allowed to vote!

In the First book, page 5, Artemis goes goes into great detail about how easily he could kill his contact, Nguyen Xuan, which caused the man some amount of discomfort. Later in the same book he kidnaps Holly and locks her in a concrete cell. In the 'Arctic Incident' (book 2), page 219, Artemis notes that it would be almost impossible to be dumber that Julius Root looks, but for most of the book he is either helping or being helped by the people around him, and refrains from making nasty comments. He does almost kill his father on page 273, but it was meant in love. What is a summary for Artemis Fowl book 1 ch1-ch5?
Artemis Fowl does research and finds a sprite, from whom he borrows the Book. He translates it from Gnommish and uses it to locate likely locations at which a fairy will go to replenish their magic. He and Butler stake out these locations. Captain Holly Short is sent out to do recon on an unshielded troll. During the mission, she runs out of magic and a child sees her. Commander Root sends her to replenish her magic. She happens to be at the same magical hotspot that Artemis and Butler are staking out at that time. She attempts to use the mesmer on them, as she only has enough magic for that, but to her horror discovers that it doesn't work (as they are wearing sunglasses) and that these humans know sacred secrets of the fairy race. Butler shoots her with a tranquillizer and they kidnap her. Commander Root and Foaly discover Holly has been kidnapped and Root goes to the surface to track her by her locator. Meanwhile, Artemis takes apart the fairy technology Holly had on her and discovers her locator. He sets a trap for Root on a Japanese whaler, involving Holly's locator, a message and a bomb, while Butler creates a distraction involving six men getting beat up by him. Holly wakes up in Fowl Manor and learns a few things about her captors and how much they know about Fairy Law, from Juliet. Root springs the trap and discovers just who it is that has kidnapped his officer and is the fairies' enemy, Artemis Fowl.
