In Greek mythology Prometheus was a Titan. The Titans were the Gods that were in charge before the Olympians took over. Prometheus sided with the Olympians in the war of succession but after wards was considered to be something of a poor cousin. He is the one credited with the creation of man from earth -- hence the equating with Dr. Frankenstein. Also Prometheus came to a bad end (he stole fire from the Gods to give to men which offended Zeus. So he got chained to a rock with an eagle visiting him every day and eating out his liver.) So the association is also an ominous one.

How is Frankenstein compared with the modern Prometheus?

Prometheus was one who, in Greek mythology, stole fire from the gods and gave it to man. As punishment for his misdeeds, Zeus, chained Prometheus to a rock and sentenced him to have his innards pecked out everyday by vultures. Dr. Frankenstein is a fictional character in Mary Shelley's novel, Frankenstein, or, The Modern Prometheus. In the novel, the doctor creates life using ground-breaking technology and methodology. His experiments climax when he reanimates a dead man, which he had stitched together from several corpses of other dead men. Not moments after his creature had come to life, Frankenstein was filled with hate and disgust for his 'son'. Frankenstein was essentially 'punished'. He had stolen a gift of the gods -in this case life, as opposed to fire- and now had to have his innards eaten out, so to speak. His punishment was that he hated his own creation, which he thought he would love unconditionally. Frankenstein, or, The Modern Prometheus is a fantastic novel that can be seen as a trial of the soul, a political allegory, an existential work, representation of Greek mythology and so forth, but, what it ultimately tells the reader is a tale about human nature and discovering who you are and what your purpose is on Earth. Hope this helps!

The theme of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley?

That he will be punished. == In the later versions of the Prometheus myth, Prometheus creates man from clay and water. It is thus Dr Victor Frankenstein who is the modern Prometheus, creating his monster from parts of dead people. And just as Prometheus was punished every day for stealing the secrets of the gods for mankind (namely how to make fire) , Frankenstein was punished by living in perpetual fear of his monster's revenge for stealing the secret of life from God.
