The subtitle is: The Modern Prometheus.
Mary Shelly The Modern Prometheus is the subtitle of Frankenstein
Mary Shelley used "the modern Prometheus" as a subtitle for her novel "Frankenstein" to draw a parallel between the Greek myth of Prometheus and her story. In Greek mythology, Prometheus created humans out of clay and stole fire from the gods to give to mankind, leading to his punishment. Similarly, Victor Frankenstein creates life from dead tissue and is punished for his actions. The subtitle emphasizes the themes of creation, ambition, and the consequences of playing god that are central to the novel.
The subtitle of Frankenstein is 'The modern Prometheus'. She did this to point out a similarity between the character in her book 'Doctor Frankenstein' and the mythical Titan Prometheus. Both created a human: Prometheus from clay, Frankenstein from dead bodies.
The Post-Modern Prometheus was created on 1997-11-30.
In Greek mythology Prometheus was a Titan. The Titans were the Gods that were in charge before the Olympians took over. Prometheus sided with the Olympians in the war of succession but after wards was considered to be something of a poor cousin. He is the one credited with the creation of man from earth -- hence the equating with Dr. Frankenstein. Also Prometheus came to a bad end (he stole fire from the Gods to give to men which offended Zeus. So he got chained to a rock with an eagle visiting him every day and eating out his liver.) So the association is also an ominous one.
The Modern Prometheus, also known as Frankenstein, was written by Mary Shelley
That he will be punished. == In the later versions of the Prometheus myth, Prometheus creates man from clay and water. It is thus Dr Victor Frankenstein who is the modern Prometheus, creating his monster from parts of dead people. And just as Prometheus was punished every day for stealing the secrets of the gods for mankind (namely how to make fire) , Frankenstein was punished by living in perpetual fear of his monster's revenge for stealing the secret of life from God.
Prometheus is the only name he is known by.
