Without having any facts, I would think that Davis was influences in equal parts by Mort Walker (beetle Bailey) and Charles M. Schultz (Peanuts). This assumption is based on the tribute to Beetle Bailey that Davis did in celebration of the strips 40th anniversary, where Davis had his characters present a giant birthday cake (which curiously only had 39 candles) to Mort Walker on a greeting card. The way he draws limps, and especially feet, also suggests Walker. From Schultz, I think, Garfield has inherited Snoopy's tendency of philosophizing over existential questions, and reaching conlusions of questionable value. But again, I don't have any hard facts. I myself would be interested in knowing the right answer.
