In the first Terminator movie, Arnold Schwarzenegger was a robot who was programmed by people in the future to kill Sarah Connor above all costs. So that was his main objective in part one - to kill.
In part 2, it was explained that all of the terminators looked pretty much the same (like Arnold Schwarzenegger). So technically, the robot in the second movie was a different one than the first movie. This robot was programmed by Sarah's future son, John Connor, to go back and save Sarah and John. That's why he was good. His main objective was to protect, not to kill.
