Good leadership & management are essential.

Hard, & interesting & varied, training are fundamentally important, as are good welfare provision for troops & their dependants.

Bored troops tend to have poor discipline, as do those who are overused/ inadequately rested.

Generally, troops do not respond well to overly authoritarian leadership & unsympathetic management; especially true of professional soldiers who have, after all, volunteered to serve. Treat roughly those who've signed up to make - possibly - the ultimate sacrifice at your peril; inculcate high morale/ esprit de corps by training them thoroughly, taking an interest in them etc, and they'll do anything you ask of them, and probably more!

It's not difficult - in theory! Doing it, in reality, however, demands the highest possible commitment of officers & NCOs. This is why junior officers (platoon leaders) & senior NCOs are the real backbone of any army.
