Captain Jaggery, the antagonist in "The Pirate's Daughter" by Philip Pullman, meets his demise during a confrontation with the crew of the ship. In a climactic moment, he falls overboard while trying to maintain control, leading to his death. His fate symbolizes the consequences of tyranny and the struggle for freedom among the sailors.
Charlotte and Zachariah deduced that Jaggery killed Mr. Hollybrass through a combination of evidence and intuition. They noticed inconsistencies in Jaggery's account of events and found clues that pointed to his involvement, such as the location of Mr. Hollybrass's body and Jaggery's behavior. Additionally, their conversations with other crew members revealed suspicions about Jaggery's tyrannical nature and previous threats he had made. This gathered information led them to conclude that Jaggery was responsible for the murder.
Charlotte Doyle's opinion of Captain Jaggery and the crew reverses when she witnesses the captain's brutal treatment of the men and realizes the crew's loyalty and camaraderie. After a violent confrontation, she sees the captain's tyrannical nature and the crew's humanity, leading her to sympathize with them. This shift is further solidified when she is forced to confront her own beliefs about justice and authority, ultimately choosing to side with the crew against the captain.
so they would not be expected to be murdered
Well, really there was two cooks.
