Rome was created through the fusions of settlements on nearby hills (the future seven hills of Rome). People liked to live on hills as they were easier to defend from raids, which were common in those days. The hills and the four valleys between them provided ample space to accommodate substantial population growth.

The area was rich in volcanic rock (tuff) which provided good building material. Water supply was good and when the population grew to the point that demand outstripped local supply, there were mountains nearby where water could be easily brought to the city with aqueducts.

Rome was also by the only Ford on the river Tiber. This made the city the main north-south communication point in the area (the river run east-west), and an important regional trading centre in the early days. The river also facilitated overseas naval trade. A port was built on the river by the palatine Hill (Portus Tiberinus) which moored ships form the sea. When this port became insufficient to accommodate the increase in trade, the port of Ostia was built at the mouth of the Tiber.

Salt works were created by the coast. Salt was a precious commodity back then as it was used as a preservative. Salt was traded along the via Salaria (salt Road) which run from the east to the west coast of central Italy.
