The great Chuck Close makes his self portraits by usually using the grid method. The grid method involves drawing boxes on a small photograph of what you would like to draw, and then basically transferring the detail in each box on a bigger paper with boxes that are multiple times bigger than those on the photograph.
For example: If your picture is 3 in. x 6 in., you would draw boxes(with the help of a ruler) sized 1 in. x 1 in. so in total you would have?...... 18 boxes!
Then, on the bigger piece of paper, preferably proportional, draw 18 squares that is either 2 in. x 2 in., or 3 in. x 3 in... and so forth.. as long as it is proportional.
DO not forget to think like an artist and draw lines and shapes instead of "eyes and nose." Use your artistic brain :)
