Esteban Trueba experiences pain when his first fiance, Rosa, dies. He is a very disagreeable and violent person for most if his life. His wife, Clara, experiences pain when he hits her, and his daughter, Blanca, experiences pain when he does not understand her love for her boyfriend, Pedro Tercero, and when her father beats her. Trueba's granddaughter, Alba, experiences pain when she is captured by the Socialist police and is raped and tortured by them. Esteban harbors his anger for the rest of his life, and his other family members suffer because of it. Although Clara stops speaking to her husband after he hits her, at her death Trueba feels that she has forgiven him. Blanca is not reconciled to her father for many years, and as a result, they live in hostility until she leaves the country. Trueba loves his granddaughter Alba and is devastated at her painful experiences. However, Alba decides at the end of the novel to forgive her perpetrators because she feels that her experiences are part of the great circle of life.
