Upon retiring from his teaching position at Hogwarts, Horace Slughorn lived a life of isolation by moving between muggle houses. His reasoning was that he was afraid that Voldemort would try and recruit him as a Death Eater.
When Slughorn sees Albus Dumbledore and Harry Potter approaching, he tries to create a fake struggle by wrecking the house and splattering dragon blood on the walls; all the while disguising himself as an armchair. Slughorn thought that Dumbledore would be deceived into thinking that the Death Eaters had gotten to him. He wanted them to believe that he had been kidnapped, attacked or even killed. Dumbledore does not fall for the ruse. He tastes the blood and realizes it is dragon blood and not Horace's. Dumbledore then recognizes the guise that Horace was trying to pull and figures that he must still be in the house. Dumbledore quickly transforms the armchair back into Slughorn so they can talk to him about coming back to Hogwarts as the potions master.
