The fastest recorded time by a man from a standing start is 9.69 set by the Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt at the Beijing Olympics 2008. It is a record that has been improved upon 12 times since the inception of electronic timing. The second fastest time is also held by Bolt and his compatriot Asafa Powell at 9.72 seconds. The fastest recorded time by a female athlete is a 21 year old record set in Indianapolis in 1988. In the quarter-finals of the US olympic trials Florence Griffith-Joyner ran an astonishing 10.49 seconds. Although no wind assistance was recorded sources heavily indicated that there was a high wind assistance. The closest any woman has come to this record was Marion Jones in Johannesburg 1998 when she ran a very fast 10.65 seconds.
