Well, it is hard to really tell you how many animals starve a year because no one collects this data. However, some pets starve due to neglect (inability of owner to provide food) and some pets starve due to abuse (deliberate act by owner to not provide food). A great number of pets who are thrown out on the streets will become thin and undernourished then starve to death due to an injury or illness that keeps them from foraging for food.
