Tribbles are small, round, cuddly monopodal creatures (animals) that the crew of the Enterprise attempted to keep as pets. But they multiply prolifically--a mean average litter consists of ten young, and they have twelve-hour gestation periods and a metabolism ninety percent geared to reproduction. Able to eat one hundred and twenty-one times their own mass in food in a twenty-four hour period, they are capable of consuming all available food stores. This once led to "The Trouble With Tribbles," the title of the 1967 Star Trek episode in which these purring fuzzballs were introduced. That trouble proved to be that they are dangerously parasitic wherever agrarian cereal crops are a commodity--without controls on their populations, tribbles can literally eat a planet barren. The tribble finds food by scent, having a keen sense of smell, and it finds the odor of a Klingon repulsive. The Klingon sense of smell is no less keen, and Klingons despise what they consider the "stench" of tribble.
